Windmill Generator Motor

Robert asks…
motor/generators for homemade windmill?
i am thinking about try to make a homemade windmill. for a hs science competition, i made a small scale one that worked well, and we had to use the standard little DC motors as the generator and it worked well.
when i was talking w/ my tech teacher, he said that this would only work w/ dc motors, i mean the generating power part. is this true, b/c i have an old blender motor i was thinking of trying to turn into a windmill motor? if you have any more questions about the motor, i will try to answer them as best i can. i also have an old garage door motor. will either work?
thanks

The blender motor is probably a universal motor. That is a DC motor with the field connected in series with the armature. That type of motor is called “universal” because it will work on either DC or AC. It is possible that it would work as a DC generator, but I think that you would need to open it up and reverse the field connection. It would need some residual magnetism to get started as a generator and it might not have enough.
The garage door motor might work by following the directions in the link provided in another answer.
Something larger than the little motor that you have already used but very similar, would be a permanent magnet DC motor from a car. They are used for electric windows, windshield wipers, electric seats and even the fan that blows air through the radiator. Probably not all motors used for those purposes are permanent magnet motors, but I think many are. Some have gears attached that might be impossible to remove. I have a radiator fan motor that would work quite well. You could probably be able to get one of those at a salvage yard.

Laura asks…
Fisher Paykel Smartdrive motor/generator?
Where can I find a Smartdrive motor from a Fisher Paykel washing maching ? I have googled it many times and I find plenty of info for making a windmill generator out of one of these but I can not find a retailer to buy one from.

admin answers:
Find a local repair shop that services that brand and see if they would be willing to order it for you. You may need to order it directly from them or buy the washing machine to get it.

Lizzie asks…
What would you need to do to a brushless DC motor to turn it into a generator?
I am new to learning about generators and dont know much about DC electricity. I am experimenting with building a windmill for household power. Would machining the shaft and placing magnets in it work? I am first building one with homemade coils and earth magnets, but somebody suggested using a dc motor housing and thought i would check into it. Thanks for any input.

Hi,
First of all,a brushless DC motor needs an alternative arrangement that could cause the reversal of input direct current for developing a constant torque in armature. This may be achieved with the help of any electronic inverter connected to the input terminals of motor as the brushes in a dc motor actually act as mechanical inverter.
Now,to run a dc motor as generator:
Rotate the shaft of the motor by coupling it through any prime mover(such as engine or any other generator) at rated speed
The field excitation to the motor circuit must be provided using any dc source. Now,the motor runs as a generator.
Importantly,an arrangement(either an electronic rectifier or brushes) that could reverse the direction of induced current in the armature, which is of alternating nature, must be provided at the output. This is required so as to obtain dc power at load.
